I'm trying to find out how to get them 808's and subs to sound like them cats down south. Like Jazzy Pha and Mannie Fresh type sounding joints. The ones that are on a key with the music not just a 808. I have plenty of 808's but I'm looking to find out how they get them to drop like that. They sound like they playing keys but it's all 808's. I pretty much have the latest sound modules like the Fantom , trinity , proteus 2000 , Motif keyboard and 2 mpc's 2000 and 200xl plus a few other secret weapons but I don't know how they do it. Is there a few tips that could help me find what I'm looking for. If so thanks in advance and I can share any tips and info I have to offer also. www.myspace.com/banginazzbeatz

i don't know how to do it with any of the stuff you mentioned, but most audio applications have pitch shifting ability these days. also, most software samplers allow you to map a sample to different keys of the keyboard. i imagine there's a way to do it with an mpc. someone else could probably tell you about that.

Yeah! Just like J1 said! I use Reason and just a nice 808 kick in the NN19 sampler synth and it stretches it out across the entire range. You may want to use a Chromatic Tuner to make sure the pitch is exact if your trying to play it to a tuned key.

i got a motif as well as fruity loops version 6 and like another mentioned before, u can use the pitch shift to match it to the key u hear......if using the motif, all u have to do is use the pitch shift knob when ur playing the 808 out...now the knob values can be changed cuz it is pre rendered to positive 3 and negative 3...u can go into a sub function of the motif and set the upper pitch to as high as positive 24, and lower pitch to as low as negative 48.....

Get yourself a Novation D-Station (Drum Station) Rack! It is an Roland 808 and 909 Analog Modeling Unit, so it doesn't use watered down samples but copies the actual analog sound produced from the Roland 808 & 909, it is the shyt! I love mine! Get one on ebay for about $200
PEACE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are so many ways to make your own distinct drops.
Take a sine wave (basically pure 60-70hz) no attack slope on the sine very short hold and sustain mid to long decay and release
Layer a punctual mid to low end kick over it (150hz-60hz). Very short decay/release/sustain on it.
It won't be exactly 808 or 909, but believe me, it will thump, turn subs into vibrators.
