Usually im recommending the soundcards from m-audio and rme. The sound and the quality of the m-audio audiophile 192 and delta 1010 system r good. The price performance ratio is hard to beat. When u have more money left, buy a soundcard from the rme hammerfall series. They have some dsps on the card and the sound is good for your recording purposes. But in the last couple of months, some other soundcards entered the market, i cannot name yet. I will post it later.

Agreed with M-Audio as best bang for your buck! I have a 2496 and it works great even with my cheap Samson mixer. If I had the cash tho I would sell them both and get that M-Audio I/O,Mixboard,Control Surface combo thing for like $700!

are you looking for an internal or external sound card...if you are looking for an external then presonus or maudio would be the best price/quality for you...fire pod or firebox from presonus or the firewire 1814/or410 fro maudio
peace

thanks for the replies...
bluevelvet - to be honest right now i'm slightly leaning towards getting an external soundcard cuz my homestudio is kinda small and space is of the essence, so an external would be nice (since it would elminiate the need for a mixer and preamp).
i have looked into the presonus firebox and the m-audio firewire solo but in my research i've found faults with both of these (customer complaints) so I really dont know which is best to buy. and for that reason, im also considering getting an internal soundcard, and a separate preamp and mixer.... so right now i'm just kinda weighing my options....
if u got firsthand experience workin with any of those external ones let me know, i'd like to hear your opinion on it...

i have worked with both of them...recorded vocals on both....presonus and maudio...for under 400$$ you are going to find some flaws for sure....do you have loot to spend....i mean you get what you pay for you know??? i currently use a firewire 1814 becauswe of all the ins and outs...the more inputs you have the more versitile you can be you don;t have to always unplug your gear...personally i like my firewire...it suits me fine...i make beats dump them into protools tracks and edit from there...i record vocals using a presonus eureka pre amp...i think it sounds good...and for budget recording it is the best option i have found...
for me my main concerns of a sound card are:
# of inputs/outputs
price
quality
reputation of manufacturer-like how hard is it to communicate with the company if something goes wrong
my 1814 has 14 ins 18 out
i paid 325 for it
i had used a tascaminterface before so this was a good upgrade
and maudio is a semi reputable name.....
just weigh your options
i have had my eye on a presonus firebox but i can;t use it with pro tools...
do you use protools or cubase??? that should be a factor in deciding on an interface
get an maudio if you plan on using protools or a digidesign mbox
i hope that helps

well for me, i dont need a lot of ins/outs cuz i'm just recording vocals for rap. plus i dont have outside gear (except for a midi keyboard).
i'm looking for an interface with decent pre's on it and possibly midi on it too. lookin to spend no more than 300 bones.
presonus firebox is outta the question, cuz i heard the pre's on it dont deliver much gain, plus i read that the box gets really hot after a while.
possibly lookin at the m-audio firewire solo, (although it dont have midi).....i have heard of some other interfaces but i heard they werent as good....
