i like el-p's production and that style is actually something i've tried to immitate at times. he also helped bring back a sence of pride in being an independent musician in hip hop. i wouldn't say he's a top 5 pick though

Afrika Bambaataa Rick Rubin Dr Dre Madlib/J Dilla Timbaland
The early days are hazy and so is production in general. There is no producer who did it alone and history tells us that those who are the most influential are not necessarily the top producers. This is more a who's influential list of 5/6 than top but does crossover too. Opinions are always going to be subjective and the top 5 will ultimately have to be judged on a number of factors not the least of which are the number of records they sell and the impact they have on the genre as a whole. Then there is the historical impact of their output in the context of the entire history of music which will come in generations to come.

Timbo was a bad call really, I have to admit there are big gaps in my hip hop history cos I was heavily into it from about 1981 - 88 and after that not with the same intensity. It was classical, metal, jazz, funk, trance, ambient whatever for many years. Fchuck I've listened to so many styles of music now I've confused the hell out of myself. I was listening to Justin Timberlake's new album the other day and came to the conclusion that it's...shallow. Lyrical content is appaling and there's not a lot of real inspiration there with the production. There are moments sure but this will album will not stand the test of time and Timbo's beats are rockin here and there but he's crossed that commercial divide in such a way that it will be a case of where to from here for him? I played J. Dilla's Shining directly after and have to conclude that it's a big...if only. The beats are awesome and will always stand out but the album's not finished and the raps don't do the beats justice. So I guess the big gap for me is DJ Premier.
