i have all the respect in the world for talib kweli and he does a nice job on this, but i'm not a fan of madlib. something about the way he eqs his stuff or something just annoys me. similarly, i've never understood why so many people like the madvillain album. i could never get through it in one sitting.

i perfer operation doomsday and especially vaudeville villain. i like the production by king honey and heat sensor much more than anything i've heard from madlib.
but let me stress, it's mostly just the overall madlib sound i don't really like. if the beats were exactly the same but had a less grating sound i'd like em more. as they are they just get on my nerves.

i can see why someone wouldn't feel madlib. he does get away with a lot of 'sloppy sequencing.' but the beats on liberation actually seem like they have better quality than some of his other projects. glad to hear that you do like doom though....

Madlib is the man, he does all kinds of live instrumentation with a lot of his beats. Madvillainy is classic

yo j1 all the albums youi listed are in constant rotation on my decks and my cd player. but for prefuse, i personally like uprock narratives and vocal studies. i like number 17 on madvillian a lot. probably my favorite on that cd. plus the quality of madvillian, is also part of why i like it. madlib eq's the crust of the sample into the beat and it in turn becomes part of the track..

He's got a style for every occasion. I don't know, I don't want to make this a big madlib arguement, but I think a lot more people feel him than not.

i've heard a pretty good amount of his stuff. lootpack's soundpieces, his mindfusion vol. 1,2,&3, movie scenes 1&2, shades of blue, blunted in the bomb shelter, the quasimoto albums, and alot of the yesterday's new quintet stuff. plus various tracks he did on other's albums. the grind date comes to mind. i like the ynq stuff the best. it's not great as far as jazz goes, but most of what i've heard is pretty good. i'm not really sure what his role in that project is though.
the instrumental tracks i mentioned before are called chrome dreams and selah's childern.

yo i gotta go with j1 here. Madlib is probably the most hyped, overrated "producer" ever. Next to Dilla. Most of thier stuff just sound sloppy to me, like they got 100 7" singles and a pound of skunk and locked themselved in a room with an SP1200 and a pair of 1210s. I ain't heard that much (Quas, Donuts, Champion Sound, Beat Kodukta LPs and some individual tracks) so if you wanna change my opinion, post some track titles for me to check.
"but listen to something that's more deserving of the 'modern classic' label like liquid swords, one word extinguisher, prince among thieves, tragic epilogue, or the cold vein. you can't tell me there's not an obvious difference in quality between those and madvillainy"
WORD. How come Prefuse is so slept on amongst heads? And APC get dismissed as backpack music when they are one of the most important hip-hop crews (in terms of pushing the genre to new places) ever.

YES. thank you. you're one of the only people i've ever come across who even knows who antipop is. that's some of my favorite music.
this is probably just conincidence, but there's a verse on the first song on liberation that kind of reminded me of m. sayyid. maybe talib was influenced? something about blue tooth and bruce bruce
