Well, many people here just sample something right off a track and put it on a drumline... Anyone here really composes shit? I mean, from scratch to the end, who makes ''real'' music?

when you mean "real music" do you mean the shitty club banger sythn tracks that are played on the radio? unless you're into that crap which is wuts killing hip hop, sampling is wuts gonna give you that sick beat....i don't know wut kind of music u like, but most non-shitty hip hop is sampled...and sampling isn't just taking a stragiht 5 second loop and adding a bass line and drums to it....when you chop something up, you can flip it to the point where you can't even tell wut the original sample was...i thought the same way as you that sampling was gay and that MPC's were really dumb...then i realized that just about all of my favorite songs were sampled and not played out with a midi keyboard...at first they seemed like they would have been played out, but then i realized that there was no way to get a guitar like that when playing it on a keyboard, or that there was no way to get a piano with horns and strings in the background like that....now i'm dying to get a 2500 and pretty much only sample...i'm not saying that composing sucks, i''m just trying to get u to realize that there is a lot more to sampling than just looping something from vinyl

I do both, so you really can't say one is better then the other. It all depend on the situation at hand. If you want to compose something and take your time w/it and know you did it all from scratch, then do that. But then you may want to make a quick track by sampling, and thats find also. As long as it good music and people are feeling it.........Then do you.........but have fun making whatever kind of music you make............Peace

I don't think that saying composing is something different from sampling is fair. I feel as tho I compose using samples! When I take a stab from this joint and a part or 2 of another 5 and then create something completly different than anything I've used thats composing. The stuff I make that way I don't even worry about clearing.
Sometimes I'll create the track in my mind and then find the samples to fill it. Or sometimes I'll take a loop and replay every part in it so I can break it down, and that too I consider a seperate composistion.
Hell most of the best sounds on synths are a sampled note from a real instrument.
I know I make "real music" with samples, and being that this is a samplers site, I think alot of others feel the same way.
And like Siver said if playing a 2 bar lead over the same old snap track is composing, then we're all in trouble.

i can do sampled beats and i can play also .....i think its wrong to hate on any kind of music just because you cant do it... or you just dont like it. if you want people to have a open mind to what you do you need to keep that same open mind about other froms of music. i think it funny when people call one form of rap music or the other shit. man if i said it once i will say it again do you!!!!! f**k what the next man is doin............

This is kind of a tricky qustion and I have a tricky answer depending on how you look at it. Sampling v Composing hmmm.....This is almost like saying should you still be called a producer if you hire a piano player to play for you or a guitar player because you can't play the guitar. Are you a Producer or a Composer? I would like to call it Sample Composing because I can find all the Instruments on records that i need for my song instead of hiring some one to play them for me.
Example: Dr. Dre has a team of other producer and musicians to play for him. When he started in the industry he was a sampling Producer. Over time his production style has changed to more Composing . I don't think that makes him any less of a producer if he was a Sampler or a Composer. But as long as he is cuttin the checks he's the Musician/ Composer & Sampling Composer. They both are equal and the concepts are both the same to make music just like Bach, Beethoven,Quincy J. and may others

DO U! IF U SAMPLE, DO THAT. IF U PLAY KEYBOARDS, DO THAT. EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN DEFINITION OF REAL MUSIC.
