Basically, every sample is different.
Depending on what part of the sample you want to filter out, the results will vary. Play around with the eq to see if you can isolate what you need from the sample and filter out what you don't need. Obviously if you are trying to isolate one high hat hit from a break beat, then use the eq to kill all frequencies on the lower end and vice versa.
The thing you need to remember when trying to "filter" a sample [whether its with an eq or a resonant filter] is that you want to remove the part you dont need. For example, if i find a shaker sound that has a bass drum underneath it, it only makes sense to kill the bass on the eq or apply a high pass filter if I want to use that shaker sound. Otherwise the bass frequencies will be underneath that shaker everytime it plays.
I hope this helps, once again there will never be a magic fix when filtering samples because they are all different. You have to rely on you ears to determine what needs to be removed or added to get the results you want. Keep practicing and you will figure it out.
